  1. Anne and her sister never agreed on most topics. Anne was never fond of her sister because she was constantly told to be more like her sister. Anne put those emotions aside so that she could make her sister happy for Hanukkah. There are not many ways for people to entertain themselves while they are in hiding. Anne erased everything out of one of Margots old cross-word puzzle books and gave it to her sister to redo so that she is not bored, and has a form of entertainment. Mrs.Frank says “You don’t heat Margot getting into arguments with them do you?… She’s always courteous with them. Never familiar. She keeps her distance and they respect her for it. Try to be more like Margot.” Mrs.Frank is indirectly picking a favorite child which is Margot. She sees everything that Margot does as phenomenal and Anne does not act like Margot therefore her behaviors are seen as horrid. Furthermore “ Anne: It isn’t new. It’s one that you’ve done. But I rubbed it all out, and if you wait a little and forget, you can do it all over again.” This gift receiving is an opportunity for Margot and Anne to create a bond. Anne roll an ample amount of time to rub out the cross word puzzle book just to make her sure that her sister was happy.

    1. Anne and Mrs.Frank relationships starts out very hostile, but ends up being healthy. Anne and Mrs.Frank would always have negative interactions when they come across each other. When Anne gave Mrs.Frank a gift it showed that Anne was willing to change their relationship. As noted in page 39 it’s says “Mrs.Frank says “ Anne you must not behave in that way”. Anne says “It was an accident. Anyone can have accidents”.Mrs. Frank says “I don’t mean in that way. I mean the answering back…”. Anne says “ and have them walk all over me”. Mrs.Frank just wants Anne to change her ways, but Anne feels like people are going to judge her and walk all over her. Furthermore on page 64 Anne says “ for mother Hanukkah greetings Mrs. Frank ten hours of me doing whatever you says”. Anne wants to change her ways and her relationship with Mrs. Frank so she is willing to do anything to make it healthy

  2. Mrs.Frank and Anne’s relationship is hostile because Mrs.Frank constantly compares Anne to Margot. Anne despises that. On page 39, Mrs.Frank says,” Margot doesn’t fight, and isn’t she…Anne…Margot! Margot! Margot! That’s all I hear from everyone.” Anne screaming at her mom illuminates how tired she is of people, like her mom, comparing her to Margot and as a result she is being disrespectful towards her mother. Mrs.Frank comparing Anne to Margot shows how she is overshadowing Anne’s personality since she feels that Margot is perfect. Anne now notices that she has been disrespectful towards her mother her an I.O.U. Promise as a gift. This gift is so significant because it could bring Anne and Mrs.Frank together and and create a healthier relationship by them just spending with each other and not fighting. Mrs.Frank reads,” Here’s an I.O.U. that i promise to pay. Ten hours of doing whatever you say. Signed Anne Frank. “he I.O.U. promise could be a start to a greater relationship between Anne and her mother and can change things between them.

  3. The person that I choose was Margot.Margot and Anne relationship in the middle because every resident is saying be like Margot. For Instance “It is necessary to fight.Margot doesn’t fight, and isn’t she …?” The gift Anne gave Margot is a crossword puzzle. The gift was meaningful because she went out her way to get a crossword puzzle.Even though she does not really like her. For Instance, “It’s one that you have done. But I rubbed it all out,and if you wait a little and forget you can do it again.”This proves to us that even though she does not really like Margot she went out of her way to get her a crossword puzzle.

    1. Also we feel like people know that Anne does not like Margot. That is why we are making a inference. You could also tell by the way she said stuff in the book by saying stop telling me to be like Margot. This Infers that even though Anne does not like Margot Anne still got her a gift.

  4. Before Scene 5, Mr. Van Daan and Anne’s relationship was hostile. They would argue with each other and get on each other’s nerves. One example to show how they argue is: “Mr. Van Dann: a man likes a girl who” listen to him once in a while. A domestic girl who’ll keep her house shining for her husband and who loves to cook and sew. Anne: I’d cut my throat first! I’d open my veins! I’m going to be remarkable!” (pg. 34). This shows how aggressive they were to each other. This relationship changes on Hanukkah celebration. Anne decided to give everybody a gift to show her appreciation, so she gave a gift that she knows what they love. The gift given to Mr. Van Daan was cigarettes. What makes this gift significant, meaningful and important to Mr. Van Daan is that Anne knows how much he misses cigarettes. Anne says “Mr. Van Daan, this present is for you. Something that you want more than anything.” (pg. 67) This shows that Anne put all the bad stuff they went through aside and tried to make the relationship better, so she went and got a gift for him.

  5. Margot and Anne’s initial relationship was quite hostile because the other residents are continuously comparing Anne and Margot. For instance, “It isn’t necessary to fight to do it. Margot doesn’t fight, and isn’t she…? Margot! Margot! Margot! That’s all I hear from everyone…” (page 39). This proves how the residents want Anne to be just like her sister, Margot, but Anne dislikes when the residents say stuff to compare Anne and Margot. The crossword puzzle is significant because Anne makes it appear like she got Margot a new crossword puzzle, but that is not true. But Margot still accepts the gift. Furthermore, “It isn’t new. It’s one that you’ve done. But I just rubbed it all out…” (page 63). This proves how the gift that Anne gave to Margot, which was the crossword puzzle. This crossword made Anne’s and Margot’s relationship more close.

  6. Ms.Frank and Anne initial relationship was toxic. One of the main reasons for that was mrs.frank comparing Anne to Margot, which Anne detest. The scene manifest this, when it states “She always courteous with them. And they respect her for it. Try to be like Margot”, on page 39. Mrs.Frank saying this proves that Anne and mrs.Frank have a toxic relationship, but all of that changes when Anne gives mrs.Frank a gift on Hanukkah. The gift was a IOU promise to do anything. The gift is significant because Anne doesn’t like to change for anything, but for her mother she is a willing to change to make her happy. The reader is showed this, “and have them walk all over me like they do her? No thanks”. This proves that Anne is trying to change her self for her relationship with her mother.

  7. Mr.Van Daan and Anne’s relationship is hostile because Mr.Van Daan does not like the way Anne displays herself. Anne is an outspoken person and it’s a problem because when she talks it’s always indignant and hostile. Mr.Van Daan says, “Talk, Talk, Talk. I never heard such a child…Anne, did you see my pipe? Anne! Am I allowed now to talk now? You’re the most aggravating.” This highlights how their relationship was toxic because he did not like that Anne talked deliberately but that’s the way she expresses herself. Now it’s Hanukkah and Anne gives out gifts, she gave Mr.Van Daan cigarettes. This gifts is significant because she is showing compassion even though they been having a rough time so even though they may not be on good terms she thought of giving him a gift. Mr Van Dann says on page 64, “ Thank you Anne. Thank you… A real Hanukkah.” This illuminates how Mr.Van Daan appreciated Anne giving him a gift although they don’t have a tremendous relationship together.

  8. Me.Dussel and Anne’s initial relationship was hostile due to Mr.Dussel telling Anne that she is completely imperfect and her disturbing Mr.Dussel at night. For example on page 53 Anne states,”According to him…nothing, is right about me”.This quote explains that Anne did not like how Mr.Dussel described her as “completely imperfect” because she feels like she is not imperfect.During Hanukkah Anne was giving out presents and the present Anne gave to Mr.Dussel was ear plugs. The ear plugs that were given to Mr.Dussel from Anne are important, because when Anne has her nightmares or trashes at night he would not be able to really hear her”They’re ear plugs…so you won’t hear me when i thrash around at night. This quote explains how important the ear plugs are to Mr.Dussel, because he gets annoyed when Anne wakes him up at night.

  9. The most meaningful gift Anne gave during Hanukkah is an IOU promise to do anything for her mother, Mrs.Frank. Mrs.Frank and Anne’s initial relationship is strained because Mrs.Frank is constantly comparing Anne to her sister, Margot. When people compare Anne to Margot, it makes Anne react obnoxiously. In the text it points out “people aren’t like that anymore…I’ve got to fight things out for myself!…Margot doesn’t fight, and she isn’t…you’re all against me!…and you’re worst of all!”.Page 39,40. Anne being compared to Margot gets in the way of Anne and her mother having a healthy relationship. In the text it also points out “was it a very bad dream? Perhaps if you told me?…I’d rather not talk about it…there’s nothing that you want?will you please ask father to come”. Page 55,56. This quote shows that Anne would rather be with her father than her mother. Hopefully the IOU Promise will bring Mrs.Frank and Anne’s relationship closer from because they are spending more time and will begin to understand each other better. Thus, this is the most meaningful gift because it is an attempt to heal a mother-and-daughter relationship.
